Initial processes of surface and interface roughening by ion irradiation
Ion irradiation of a metal surface result in surface roughening. Furthermore irradiation at glancing incidence enables a well pronounched pattern formation on the surface. At a very small angle between ion beam and the surface, it is difficult to start this process, when the surface is very clean. We investigate this initial process by studying the effects of pre-existence adsorbates, adatoms, and surface steps.
