Spin-Wave Optics

Spin waves are collective excitations of the electronic spin system of a solid, which can be described by the quasiparticle magnon. Magnons allow information transfer and processing and are considered to be potential successors to electronic data processing.

A fundamental understanding of, among other things, transport properties must first be gained. We have recently developed a method that allows us to dynamically program magnetic landscapes in a light-induced manner, in which the propagation of spin waves can be manipulated in a targeted manner. For this purpose we use our experience in the application of spatial light modulators and can thus avoid microstructuring. Such magnetic landscapes can e.g. form magnonic crystals or even allow mode conversion between different branches of the spin wave dispersion relation.
